Now available on Steam!

Seaside Racing is now available on Steam!

As I wrote in the previous post, I've been slowly working towards releasing the game on Steam and I'm happy to report that it's finally out since early this month: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2899320/Seaside_Racing/

Whether you're here from the original Xbox Live Indie Games days (14 years ago!) or have found the game more recently here on Itch, I would be very happy if you took the time to download the game on Steam and write a good review! The first few days after release saw some good activity but that trend has sadly stopped and now new players are few and far between. If the game is ever going to have a revival, this is it. I've uploaded Steam keys to Itch so if you have bought the game here you are able to claim a Steam key on the download page for free. If you're logged in to Itch, you can see your download page here.

With the Steam release, I feel that the game is finally as good as or even better than the original Xbox version. Steam's Networking features (seeing friends play, joining friends' games) are really nice and comparable to how Xbox Live worked back in the day.

Here is what's new in the Steam release:

  • Music (!!!) by my friend Per Baltzar
  • Steam Networking - No more connection problems, you should always be able to connect to a friend's game!
  • Steam Rich Presence - See when your friends are playing and easily join their game!
  • Steam Deck + Linux support
  • A much improved skybox and water shader
  • Ability to change nickname
  • A ton of little small improvements
Note: The Itch build of the game gets all the non-Steam improvements as well of course, but the (non-existent) player base will sadly be split between Steam and non-Steam.

Itch/Steam version differences

  • The Steam version of the game uses Steam Networking to connect players over the Internet and this is more robust than my own matchmaking server as if there is a connection problem between two players, the traffic will be relayed over the Steam network. In theory, players should always be able to connect in the Steam version. If you plan to play online, I recommend the Steam version over the Itch version.
  • Steam requires macOS apps to be signed (which I don't want to bother with) so the game is not available for macOS on Steam at the moment
